Jean Klein was the beloved director of education at Wood Memorial Library for more than 25 years. A skilled amateur Archaeologist, Jean’s passion for local Native American heritage helped to inspire what Nowashe Village is today. In honor of her retirement, a scholarship fund was designated in her name to support students from schools in low-income communities to attend a Native American field trip experience at Wood Memorial Library for free or at a reduced price.
Earlier in 2023, Jean passed away at the age of 93. Her loving family – including a middle school history teacher and a granddaughter who researched and installed native plants inside Nowashe in the summer of 2021 – asked that memorial contributions be made to her namesake’s scholarship fund. Thus, the Jean Klein Scholarship Fund, now for Nowashe Village specifically, was revived.
We invite schools of any grade level to apply for discounted field trip to Nowashe Village by contacting our Executive Director with the following information:
- Name and location of school
- Grade level and number of students to visit Nowashe Village
- Percentage of students at your school who receive free or reduced-price meals in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) school nutrition programs (must be at least 50% to qualify for a scholarship)
Scholarships will be granted on a first-come, first-serve basis on a sliding scale based on need. Discounts will range between 50% and 100% (free). Scholarships will available indefinitely as long as there are funds.
