DESCRIPTION:Unearth the past! Step into the role of Archaeologist in this hands-on investigation of a Connecticut “excavation site.” Students will explore artifacts through interactive activities and then analyze excavation notes\, maps\, and artifacts. Participants will work together\, looking at clues to figure out who lived at the site\, dates\, and what may have happened. Discover how archaeologists turn fragments of the past into full stories. \nFor ages 10 to 19. Registration is required as there is a limit of 24 participants. Registration is required – please sign up below!\n \nTravel back in time to the Woodland Period of central Connecticut (3000-400 years ago)\, when Indigenous communities practiced a more agricultural way of life. This presentation by the Watershed History Collective will explore the material culture of the Woodland Indigenous peoples\, how they used the natural resources around them\, how gender roles were divided\, and how they hunted and prepared food. This one-hour program offers more than a lesson\, it’s an invitation to understand the deep\, enduring relationship between people\, land\, and Sustenance that has shaped Native life for thousands of years. \nNaturalists will begin by honoring the diverse tribal nations of the region—ancestral stewards of this land—whose presence and wisdom continue to thrive today. From there\, you’ll explore how seasonal rhythms guided every aspect of life: the careful timing of planting and harvesting\, the skilled practices of hunting and fishing\, and the ingenious methods used to gather wild foods and cultivate the “Three Sisters” (corn\, beans\, and Squash) in harmony with the earth. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou’ll discover how traditional technologies\, like fish weirs\, shell tools\, and bark containers\, were not just practical innovations\, but expressions of deep ecological knowledge.
