An Indigenous Tribal Nation located in southeastern Massachusetts. As a word, Wampanoag can mean “People of the First Light, People of the Dawn, People of the Rising Sun.” There are five federally recognized Wampanoag tribes: The Mashpee Wampanoag; the Aquinnah Wampanoag; the Herring Pond Wampanoag; the Assawompsett-Nemasket Band of Wampanoags; and the Pocasset Wampanoag.
