Connecticut Open House Day-FREE Admission
On June 12th, join us for Connecticut Open House Day, when admission to Nowashe Village will be FREE for all! We will be celebrating turtles, a sacred animal to Native Peoples. Activities free with admission will include a children’s craft, Native American storytelling and a lesson in how you can refer to a turtle’s shell as a calendar.
FREE ACTIVITIES
Indigenous Clothing and Personal Adornment in the Woodland Period: Join Dylan Smith (Shinnecock/Montauk/Unkechaug Tribal Nations) as he explores the various items of clothing worn by East Coast’s Native Peoples. Topics to be discussed include seasonal apparel, everyday dress, work attire, gender-specific attire as well as specialty jewelry, adornments and regalia.
Storytelling: Historically, Native, or Indigenous Peoples, did not have a written language. Instead, they utilized Oral Tradition as a means to educate and transmit knowledge to Tribal Members. Join us as we bring Indigenous Peoples’ stories to life in an engaging and dynamic manner. Suitable for all ages.
Time Machine (Stone Tools through Time): Join Lead Docents Maureen Bourne and Monica Duval and travel back in time to the Paleo, Archaic and Woodland Periods. Museum-goers will see the tools which made surviving and thriving in CT’s environment possible. Stone-Age tools and their modern-day counterparts also will be explored.
Everything Turtle!: Join Docent Lindsay Kiesewetter at our village crafts table for hands-on fun involving everything Turtle! Enjoy turtle coloring pages, make your own turtle calendar, and craft your own turtle pendant necklace (while supplies last).
