Free Family Fun: Plants and Animals
Exploring the plants and animals of Nowashe Village make for a great day of FREE fun for the whole family!
Plants
Embark on a Village-wide scavenger hunt to identify a variety of plants and trees in Nowashe – both native to this are as well as Invasive species. Learn how Native Americans used various plants for food, dyes, to make arrows, and even as diapers! South Windsor’s Senior Environmental Planner Jeff Folger will be on hand to discuss local invasive species and how to Eradicate (and examine some up close in Nowashe … unfortunately).
Animals
Plants not your thing? There will also be a scavenger hunt to identify a variety of animal tracks. Touch and feel different animal hides and pelts and how Native Peoples used them. Storytelling
Native Peoples relied on Oral Tradition to pass down history, morals and explanations about the world around them. Often times stories featured animals and other natural elements. . Hailing from Windsor, CT, Ron Narcisse will be the featured Storyteller in Nowashe. Ron has Nehantic Narragansett heritage and will choose a story to tell from the Animal or Plant Nation that resonates with him.
History
Love history and want to learn more about the village, the history of local Indigenous Peoples, the Three Sisters Garden, and other plants and trees in Nowashe? Dozens of QR Codes will be stationed throughout the Village for you to explore at your own pace.
